There is an urgent need to have a population approach to the problems of poor mental health. Health professionals must go into the community as a matter of public health concern, just like the approach to contain contagious diseases like polio or HIV/AIDS.
In daily practice, professionals encounter children who need intervention for poor school performance, those who have developed mental disorders due to psychosocial problems, and those with special needs. Poor school performance is the tip of the iceberg, it can cause poor mental health, low self-esteem, behavioral problems, drug abuse, relationship problems and low productivity.
